Move abroad · European car ownership

Your own car.
Your kind of Europe.

Buy with a plan. Own with confidence. Make the road trip yours.

We bought our European car before we had residency. A Bulgarian company made that ownership route possible for us. Now we help you explore the process with our lawyer—or work with Sam to find a car you’ll love driving.

Practical help from owners who have done it. Legal eligibility and country-specific use are reviewed for your situation.

You don’t need the same car we chose. You need a car you’ll enjoy—and an ownership plan that fits how you’ll travel.

Plan your European car

Our car. Our experience.

We found it in Germany.
We registered it in Bulgaria.

Buying a car and deciding where to register it are two different decisions. We wanted a particular Mercedes S-Class, a strong maintenance history, and an affordable place to keep it registered with EU plates.

We found our one-owner 2004 S-320 CDI in Worms, Germany, then brought it to Bulgaria. Dimitar formed and administers the Bulgarian company that owns it. We did this before becoming residents of Albania.

Your purchase country does not have to be your registration country. Plan both before committing to a car.

The foundational package

Bulgaria Car Ownership Introduction

A prepared start and a personal handoff to the lawyer who helped us own our car before residency.

Start with Smile Abroad for €99. We help organise your plans in a 30-minute call, prepare a concise brief, and introduce you privately to the Bulgarian lawyer we use. Company formation, registration and other legal work are quoted separately; the lawyer confirms what is possible for your case.

  1. A focused preparation call

One 30-minute call with Smile Abroad to clarify your car, budget, purchase country, residency situation, and where you intend to use it.

  2. Your ownership brief and checklist

A written summary, a buying-and-registration preparation checklist, and the questions to resolve before you pay for a vehicle.

  3. A supported introduction to our Bulgarian lawyer

After your package purchase and preparation call, your welcome packet includes the lawyer’s contact details and next steps. With your permission, we make a coordinated email introduction using your completed brief, plus one follow-up.

Meet your car person

Sam knows the difference between a car you want and a car you want to own.

Sam has bought and sold hundreds of cars, worked for Berkshire Hathaway Automotive for several years, and spent 20 years immersed in vintage cars, preservation, and restoration.

His 1962 Mercedes-Benz 180d started the Mercedes fascination. The cars that followed taught him how much history, condition, and ownership costs matter—and how easily excitement can get ahead of a good buying decision.

An interesting car should add to the adventure. The buying plan should help you enjoy it.

Sam’s role is to help you ask better questions, compare the choices, and feel supported through an unfamiliar purchase. For Bulgarian legal work or a practical car purchase there, start with Smile Abroad’s Bulgaria package so we can prepare your case and coordinate the right support.

From first question to next step

Start with the plan.
Then move toward the car.

01

Choose your path

Pick the €99 Bulgaria introduction, a planning session, or shopping support. If you’re unsure, start with the session.

02

Get your scope

The Bulgaria introduction is €99 for the call and handoff. Legal services have a separate scope and quote; eligibility and timing need the lawyer’s confirmation.

03

Pay and prepare

Purchase your Smile Abroad package, then open your client Library to book your call and complete the preparation brief.

04

Make the handoff

After the Bulgaria package purchase and initial call, receive the lawyer’s details privately in your welcome packet. We make the introduction with your completed brief.

Owning it after you buy it

Plan the whole ownership budget.

Company ownership brings ongoing responsibilities. Before buying, understand both the setup and the recurring costs for your particular car and travel plans.

Your first-year budget

  • The vehiclePurchase price, condition, and maintenance reserve.
  • The setupYour Smile Abroad package and any separately quoted professional services.
  • The route to registrationTransport or export plates, insurance, inspection, government charges, and any relevant taxes.

Your ongoing budget

  • The companyAdministration, accounting, filings, and any required updates.
  • The carInsurance, tax, inspection schedule, servicing, and repairs.
  • The way you travelWhere it is kept and used, renewal trips, storage, and country-specific requirements.

Ownership, registration, and your right to use the car are separate questions.

Bulgarian plates do not remove another country’s rules on residence, long-term vehicle use, insurance, customs, or emissions zones. Tell Smile Abroad where you live and where the car will spend its time so we can coordinate the relevant professional checks.

Before you choose

Good questions. Clear expectations.

Can I start before becoming a resident in Europe?

That is what we did. Our Bulgarian lawyer set up the company that owns our car before we had residency in Albania. Start with Smile Abroad so we can coordinate a review of your eligibility and intended use, rather than assume our circumstances apply to everyone.

Do I have to buy the car in Bulgaria?

Our car came from Germany. Buying elsewhere can be an option, but the ownership, purchase paperwork, transport, and registration sequence should be planned in advance. Sam can help with car choices outside Bulgaria; we coordinate confirmation of the Bulgarian legal process through our package.

Can I get help buying a new or everyday car in Bulgaria?

Yes. Tell Smile Abroad what you want to buy so we can coordinate a quote for local purchase assistance, translation, and dealership support. Vehicle sourcing and buying assistance are separate from the €99 introduction package and require an agreed scope.

What if I want a young classic or an unusual European car?

This is where Sam’s interest and experience fit particularly well. Start with a planning session or Shopping Support. Think through condition, records, maintenance availability, touring comfort, and where an older car can be driven—not only the purchase price.

What if I will register or export the car somewhere else?

Sam’s guidance can still be useful. The €195 and €495 options do not require Bulgaria registration. Your destination-country registration, customs, insurance, and tax questions belong with the appropriate local professionals.

How long does the Bulgaria process take, and do I need to travel?

It depends on the documents, car, purchase route, and work that can be completed remotely. Get a current written timeline before booking travel. Do not assume a short registration appointment covers the entire company setup and purchase process.

How do I get connected with the Bulgarian lawyer?

Start through Smile Abroad. After you purchase the Bulgaria Car Ownership Introduction package and complete your initial preparation call, we share the lawyer’s contact details privately in your welcome packet and introduce you with your completed brief. Your questions, quote, and preparation stay coordinated through our process.

What exactly am I paying Smile Abroad for?

The €99 fee covers one 30-minute preparation call, a concise written brief, our checklist, a private introduction after the call, and one follow-up to confirm the connection. It does not cover company formation, registration or other legal work. Those services, local buying assistance, third-party costs and ongoing administration are quoted separately. Sam’s car-shopping help is its own service.

Is this unlimited concierge support or a vehicle inspection?

No. Each offer has a defined scope. Sam provides remote buying guidance. Mechanical inspections, travel, negotiations, transport, and import work need their own quote, and no package guarantees vehicle condition or a successful purchase.

Smile Abroad provides practical buying guidance and coordination. Appointed professionals provide their own legal or technical services under agreed terms. Company formation does not grant immigration status or a driving licence. Your eligibility, ownership structure, taxes, insurance, registration, and use in each country require case-specific confirmation. It is ultimately your personal responsibility to verify these requirements with the appropriate professionals.
