The practical side of leaving

You can picture life abroad.
What needs to work when you get there?

One decision can depend on three others. We help you see how the arrangements connect, so you can work through them before they become urgent.

“Will I be able to access my money?”

Accounts, cards, authentication and backups: identify what to confirm with your providers for your actual destination and residence.

“What about my U.S. address and phone?”

Separate mail handling from residence requirements. Work through verification, phone continuity and the questions to ask before making changes.

“What needs to happen before I leave?”

Put document checks, provider questions and specialist decisions in an order you can follow.

We’ve organised a real departure

Prepare for the practical details.
Make room for the life you want.

In 2024, we sold our house, our cars and most of our belongings. Less than 60 days after deciding to leave, we arrived in Albania with four checked bags, two carry-ons and our cat, Arrow.

Sam Correll & Spencer Claiborne

Alongside the excitement, we had to work through the arrangements that would keep everyday life running after we left the U.S.

We bring that experience to your preparation: asking practical questions, finding what needs attention and making the next steps clearer.

And we’ve built a community here. The photo below shows Smile Abroad Club members enjoying a private event on our terrace after relocating to Albania.

Your circumstances may differ from ours. We help you organise them and identify where your provider or a qualified professional needs to confirm the answer.

What you leave with

Know the gaps.
Know the order. Know who to contact.

The paid value is applying the questions to your own move: a personalised gap assessment and a written plan you can keep working through.

01

Your preparation priorities

A map of your current arrangements and the gaps that deserve attention first.

02

An order of action

What to do before departure, what depends on another decision and what can be addressed later.

03

Questions for the right people

A focused list for your providers, tax or domicile specialist, and residency professional where needed.

From a long list to a working plan

Leave with something you can use.

Your preparation plan brings the decisions together, with priorities, dependencies and who needs to confirm each answer.

  • Money access and card replacement questions
  • Phone verification and backup authentication
  • Mail, identification and document checks
  • Provider requirements and specialist questions

Is this the right starting point?

You have the resources.
You want the preparations in order.

This session is for Americans planning a move or extended life abroad who already have income, pensions, savings or other resources to support it.

It can be especially useful for retirees, couples and households coordinating several arrangements. You don’t need to be wealthy or have every detail settled.

Bring your destination, timeline and current arrangements. We help you organise the transition around the circumstances you actually have.

01

Choose your home state with intention.

A properly established change of state domicile can bring substantial state income tax savings for some people. Your income, existing ties and the applicable rules determine what’s possible.

02

Give your U.S. setup a clear sequence.

We use Savvy Nomad. Its guided Florida or Texas domicile preparation, document support, and address and mail services can help you work through the practical steps before departure.

03

Connect it to your whole move.

Use Savvy Nomad for a guided U.S. setup. Use our private session to fit that decision into your banking, phone, documents and wider preparation.

Another practical option

Have a trusted friend or family member in a suitable state?

With their permission, their home may provide a practical base and a dependable way to receive mail. You may be able to organise the setup yourself if you meet the state’s actual requirements and your providers accept the arrangement.

Choose the help that fits

Make the plan around your circumstances.

Agree how important mail, replacement cards and time-sensitive notices will be handled. A household address alone does not establish domicile or remove obligations to your former state. We can help you compare practical needs and prepare questions for the right professionals.

Savvy Nomad is separate from the session fee. It provides education and document preparation, not personalised legal or tax advice. Confirm your tax position with a qualified adviser and address requirements with each provider. Services depend on the plan you choose; outcomes and savings vary.

How the session works

Prepare together.
Keep moving with a plan.

1

Share the practical picture

Complete an advance intake about your destination, timeline, provider names, current arrangements and the questions you want to resolve.

2

Work through the priorities

Meet online with Sam & Spencer for a private 90-minute session. Identify gaps, dependencies and the questions that need confirmation.

3

Use your written preparation plan

Your written plan arrives in your session’s Shared Notes within five business days after the call. Keep your priorities, next steps and responsibilities in one place, including who to contact for specialist decisions.

Share what helps us plan

We need the picture,
not your private credentials.

Provider names and a description of your arrangements are enough to start. If useful for fit, share a broad planning range rather than exact private balances.

Do not send passwords, account numbers or Social Security numbers. We do not collect credentials or take control of your accounts.

Smile Abroad provides practical planning and coordination. Personalised tax conclusions, domicile determinations, investment or retirement withdrawal advice, and residency eligibility decisions belong with appropriately qualified professionals.

Your preparation session

Know what to put in place.
And in what order.

Make the practical questions easier to act on, with dedicated time for your circumstances.

Bring the arrangements you have, the move you’re considering and the decisions that are making it feel complicated.

Together, we turn them into priorities and a preparation plan you can follow.

After purchase, open your session in your Smile Abroad Library. Email your intake answers and preferred times to [email protected], or use the Schedule session link in your coaching package. We confirm your appointment and online meeting details with you.

Before you choose

A few useful answers.

Is this only for retirees or people moving to Albania?

No. It is for Americans with existing income or resources who want practical preparation for a move or extended life abroad. Albania is our home base. Your providers and relevant professionals must confirm destination-specific requirements.

Can you help with pension documents for residency?

We can help organise your questions and the evidence to discuss with a residency professional. That professional must confirm current requirements and your eligibility. Pension income alone does not guarantee residency.

Is this financial planning or tax advice?

This is practical move preparation and coordination. Personalised tax, legal, investment, retirement withdrawal and immigration advice should come from the appropriately qualified professional.

Can you guarantee my bank will accept an address or keep my account open?

No. Each provider must confirm its requirements for your actual residence and destination. We help you identify the questions to resolve before making changes.

Do I have to use Savvy Nomad?

No. We use it and recommend exploring its guided Florida or Texas domicile preparation if you want that level of support. A trusted friend or relative in a suitable state may be another practical option if the arrangement meets your needs and the relevant requirements. Savvy Nomad has its own fees and terms.

Can I use a friend or family member’s address?

Potentially, with their permission and where your providers accept it. A trusted household in a suitable state can help with mail and practical arrangements. Using the address alone does not establish your state domicile. Confirm what your actual circumstances require with your providers and a qualified adviser.

Can planning my U.S. residency before departure save money?

It can. A valid change of state domicile may reduce state income tax for some people, while organised documents and dependable mail can reduce practical headaches. Savings depend on your income, existing state ties and the applicable rules. Federal and state-source tax obligations may still apply. A qualified tax adviser should assess your position.

How do I save $60 with Savvy Nomad?

First click our Savvy Nomad referral link to save $60, then manually enter SmileAbroadYT at signup. Both steps are required; the code is not applied automatically. Confirm your eligible plan and that the discount appears before completing signup. Smile Abroad may earn a commission. Savvy Nomad is separate from the session fee.

What if my main concern is how to earn abroad?

Start with Earn Abroad — Income & Business Strategy Session. This preparation session is designed around income or resources you already have.

Will you change my accounts or arrange everything for me?

No. We help you map the arrangements, prioritise the tasks and identify who needs to confirm each decision. You remain in control of your accounts and complete changes with the appropriate providers. Implementation and professional services are separate.

When can I book, and what happens after the session?

You can book now. After purchase, open your session in your Smile Abroad Library and email your intake answers and two or three preferred times, with your time zone, to [email protected]. The Schedule session link in your coaching package also opens an email to us. We confirm the appointment and online meeting details with you. Your written preparation plan is added to your session’s Shared Notes within five business days after the call. One session and one written plan are included; additional sessions and ongoing support are separate.
